About CBT and our work together

What is the difference between CBT and other talking therapies?

CBT is structured, time-limited, and focused on the patterns of thinking and behaviour that are keeping difficulties in place. Compared with open-ended counselling or psychodynamic therapy, it tends to involve more between-session practice, clearer agreed goals, and a sharper focus on the present. It is the most-researched psychological treatment for many common difficulties.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies with what you bring. CBT is generally a short-term therapy, and many people begin to make progress within six to twelve sessions. Longer-term therapy is offered where it is more appropriate. After your assessment, we will agree a recommended number of sessions, and review it as we go.

What if I’m not sure CBT is right for me?

The free initial 15-minute call is designed for exactly this question. It is a no-obligation conversation to explore whether CBT, and working with us, seems like the right fit. If it isn’t, we will say so, and where we can we will point you toward something more suitable.

Is what I share confidential?

Yes. Sessions are held in confidence, to the standards of our professional body, and we are fully GDPR compliant. The only exceptions are where there is a serious concern about safety or risk of harm, or where we are legally required to disclose. Wherever possible, this would be discussed with you first.

Sessions and fees

How long is a session?

Each session is 50 minutes. Assessment sessions are sometimes a little longer.

How much does it cost?

In-person sessions in Milton Keynes are £85. Online sessions, available across the UK by secure video, are £75. There is no charge for the initial 15-minute introductory call.

How do I pay?

Payment is by bank transfer or cash, at least 24 hours before each session. We do not hold card details. If payment has not been received in time, the appointment will be cancelled.

What is your cancellation policy?

If you need to cancel, please give at least 24 hours’ notice. Appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours’ notice will be charged in full, as we are usually unable to fill the slot at short notice.

Do you offer online sessions or only in person?

Both. Sessions are offered in person at our consulting room in Milton Keynes and online via secure video. Online sessions are available across the UK. We can combine the two if that works better for your life.

How soon can we start?

Availability varies week to week. Once you have been in touch, we will let you know the earliest realistic options, usually within a couple of weeks of the assessment session.

Getting started and working with us

What happens after I send a message?

We reply within two working days. The next step is a free 15-minute introductory call to see if we are a good fit. If we go ahead, we book a longer assessment session, followed by ongoing weekly sessions of 50 minutes, with regular reviews of progress.

Do you work with children and young people as well as adults?

Yes. We work with children, young people, and adults. Therapy is adapted to each life stage in a way that feels accessible, supportive, and meaningful. For children and young people, sessions may include parents or carers as appropriate.

I am neurodivergent. Can you support me?

Yes. Supporting neurodivergent individuals is one of our particular areas of interest, especially children and young people. The approach is neuro-affirming: differences are respected, strengths are recognised, and support is shaped around how you actually work, not a default template.

Can you tell me more about what to expect from a session?

During our first session, we will talk through what has brought you to therapy and consider the best way forward. Together, we build an understanding of how thoughts, feelings, and behaviours may be interacting, and create a plan that feels supportive and manageable. We will not rush you, and we will not ask you to take steps before you are ready.
